Lower circumambulatory path - Sanchi
Circumambulation(what a mouth full! :)) - means "to walk around". The great stupa in Sanchi has 2 circumambulatory paths, the upper one can be seen in the upper right corner of the image.
The process of walking around something or someone divine is considering an act of purification and a show of respect. This Buddhist practice was borrowed from Hinduism(known as Pradakshina). Circumambulation must always performed clockwise; If anyone knows why, please let me know.
Stupas usually contain relics of Buddha or his disciplies. More than 2000 years ago, Emperor Ashoka, opened stupas all across the sub continent and placed their relics in the great stupa at Sanchi.
Among all the figures in history, Buddha is one of my favourites. He taught that a person's best teacher is his own life, gaining wisdom from the experiences he has undergone.
