Sinhagad or Sinhgad is a fort which is around 30 km, southwest of Pune, India. The fort is located on a hill of around 800 metres. The fort has seen many important battles, specially the battle of Sinhagad in 1670. Earlier named as 'Kondana', it was renamed as Sinhagad, after the battle of Sinhagad was fought under the leadership of Tanaji , a general of Shivaji. Tanaji lost his life, but his brother Suryaji took over and captured Kondana. Shivaji commented on his death - We gained the fort, but lost the lion".In honor of Tanaji's death, the fort was renamed as Sinhagad. ( "Sinha" means "Lion" ).
