To Pangong Tso on the India-China Border, originally uploaded by © Ajit Karthik.

We are less than 10 kilometers from the Indian Border and the Line of Control with China (LoC) and on our way to the beautiful Pangong Tso, a large saltwater lake at a height of 14,000 feet.

Behind us is Pagal Nalla ("Mad River") - so called because of its erratic behavior. The river is fed from glacier melt from the mountains to the right, and crossing it after 12PM is impossible.

We start from Leh at around 4AM, so that we can cross Pagal Nalla and cross back to the Indian side before the river fills up at around 12PM. Pangong Tso is about 150 kilometers from Leh and we have to cross the third highest pass in the world (Chang La) to get to Pangong Tso from Leh.

Pangong Tso: Heaven on Earth, originally uploaded by © Ajit Karthik.

At the border of India and China, deep in the Himalayas at 14,000 feet, lies one of the highest saltwater lakes in the world. Known as Pangong Tso (Pangong Lake), this lake straddles the border, with 25% lying within India and 75% lying in China. At 12 o'clock are seen mountains in China. Permits are required to visit the lake.

Despite this lake being brackish, it completely freezes in winter. The lake is known for its crystal clear waters and deep turquoise hues.

Bodhisattvas at Lamayuru Gompa, Leh, India, originally uploaded by © Ajit Karthik.

In this dark, isolated and utterly quiet alcove at the Lamayuru Monastery (Leh, India) is a collection of superb ancient Bodhisattva idols. Seen here are 8 Bodhisattvas (Sanskrit for "enlightened beings") and in the center is an incarnation of Lord Buddha.

To the right of these statues can be seen handwritten teachings of Buddha wrapped in cloth.

In the room at the back, the statue of Avalokitesvara Buddha can be seen. For a photo of this Buddha statue, please see: Avalokitesvara Buddha

Sitting for a few moments in this room, I realized the true meaning of Peace.

Himalayan Paradise, originally uploaded by © Ajit Karthik.

The shores and surroundings of Pangong Tso are beautiful beyond any description.

The culmination of deep blue skies, puffy white clouds, a rust-colored mountainscape cut by glaciers, red and yellow mineral deposits and the green waters of Pangong make this place just an amazing place to sit at length, stare and reminisce on the beautiful planet on which we live.

Pure bliss at 14,000 feet!

* Pangong Tso (Pangong Lake) is situated on the Sino-Indian Line of Control. You can read more about this heavenly place here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pangong_Tso

Innocence, originally uploaded by © Photography24x7.

On my return journey from Goverdhan to Chandigarh. When I was passing by the rural countryside, I was amazed with the innocence of these children.
She is taking care of her brothers and also arranging household requirements. In rural India, you can see how responsibles girls are.
