7000 tons of rock were quarried to make the statue of Thiruvalluvar. Though his origins are shrouded in mystery, he's one of the most revered figures in Tamil culture. His claim to fame is his book, the Thirukural, a guide to leading a moral life without giving up the duties of a householder.

The pedestal and the statue together is 133 feet high - corresponding to the 133 chapters of the Thirukural. The statue is made entirely out of granite. Raw muscle power of 150 sculptors was used to carve the statue, with each sculptor wearing out 40-50 iron chisels a day.

Built over a span of 10 years, the statue is located on a small rocky outcrop off the coast of Kanyakumari.
